Recipe For Fitness, LLC was formed officially in 2011, the culmination of years of planning, learning, and a passion to help others find success in their weight loss journeys. As a company, our goal is to be a resource to others - to educate, encourage and empower people to make their health a priority, and reach their goals. Recipe For Fitness provides a multitude of free resources including Nutrition Education, Fitness Education, Food-Lifestyle Tips, Workout and Cardio Music Playlists, and even shows you how to eat clean by sharing in Today's Cooler what's on our plate each day.
We strive to continue offering more quality resources, both free and paid, as we grow.
Hi! I'm Chelle (pronounced Shelly). In December of 2006 I broke. Shattered, actually. I was in a dressing room searching for something to wear out for New Year's Eve. Nothing fit. I peered into that mirror in my tiny cubicle and knew that I looked as fat as I felt. I broke down. Plans were cancelled that year, and as my husband and I talked, we decided the time had come to quit crying (me) and do something about it. January 2nd, we walked into a local gym, signed up, and committed to a path that would change our lives. We scheduled appointments with trainers, feeling hopeful, and then listened with stunned confusion as we were told that exercise is only a small part of the journey - that diet is 80%. "So, what do we do about our diets?" we asked. "Sorry, we can't help you with that."
Thankfully, the trainer randomly chosen for me turned out to be one of the best additions to my life. Though she couldn't offer official nutrition advice (unless a trainer is certified in Nutrition, they are legally and ethically barred from doing so), she could give me pointers, reading material, and show me. As I continued in my journey, we would periodically go out to eat together - I watched her like a hawk! I copied how she ordered (had to be a bit disconcerting for her), and when I'd go home, I'd research nutrition. My curiosity was boundless, and I searched and searched for information - but it was so hard to find! Few were the books on how to eat clean, and every website I found wanted to charge me to teach me. It was frustrating.
In August of 2007, I tore my patellar tendon (knee). Grounded from exercise, I panicked. How would I lose the weight? Was I going to gain everything back now? My trainer eased my fears, and then said something that's stuck with me - "Now you have to get serious. It's all about diet now. How bad do you want it?" She worked hard to keep me as active as possible, being creative in our workouts and planning, but the burden of success was now solely on my shoulders. It lit a fire in me - I had a goal to reach, and I wanted to lose that weight more than anything.
I got serious about learning, building new food habits, tweaking recipes... there were many, many failures in the kitchen. My family threatened to mutiny. Then they told me, "If you can make it taste good, we'll eat it." You see, at this point, I still thought that healthy food had to taste bland, plain, blah (plain chicken breast, steamed broccoli and brown rice were my staples). I had a big learning curve. Needless to say, I learned. And as I did, I decided to start a website - to become the resource, I had been searching for. I felt that if I could share what I'd found and learned, maybe I could save someone else the frustration I'd experienced - and that they wouldn't feel they had to walk the road alone. My first website was an extension of our family site... www.BillandChelle.com/fitness
My injury healed, though over the years I've continued to battle injury and disease frequently (I have arthritis and asthma), and in October of 2008, I reached my goal weight. Determined to continue to better myself, my journey has led me through a variety of challenges including the burlesque stage, magazine features for my weight loss success (Women's Health, Scottsdale Health, and Oxygen Magazine), and in August 2011, I took the stage and competed in my first Figure Competition, placing 4th in both my classes (trophies!). My little website grew up and became www.RecipeForFitness.com
I've since competed again (more hardware!), and added a few things (personal trainer certification!). There's still more to come. I continue to grow, learn, and become, and believe that one day I might even grow up! Maybe. Because I believe that being transparent in my own life is essential to helping others, I continue to share my journey on my blog - the good, the bad, and the ugly ;-)
