Do calories matter? There are a lot of differing opinions on counting calories. Many have merit, and it's an individual decision whether to track calorie intake or not. My professional opinion is that counting calories is a tool - one we can use to guide us and help achieve, and maintain, our goals. Calories are, to simplify, a measure of energy. The calories in our diets should provide us with the energy we need to live - from the tiniest cell, to the body as a whole.
How many calories do you need? That depends. It actually depends on quite a bit. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to how many calories we need for optimal health, fitness, and/or weight loss. Further, the amount of energy (calories) we need will change throughout our lives. There are many "calculators" online that spit out a "you need this many..." message. Accurate? Maybe. Maybe not. These calculators run on one of several formulas - which are helpful, but miss the human element. If you're goal is to lose weight, your calorie intake (and your macronutrient ratios) will change several times along the way. What you need right now, isn't what you'll need in several weeks, months, or next year. If you're a distance runner, you'll need different nutrition than a bodybuilder, who needs different nutrition than a teacher or C.P.A. who exercises regularly (which will be different from one who doesn't exercise at all).
So, what's the solution? Will it surprise you to learn that I encourage you to use an online calculator? I do. Mine. ;-) It's a great resource to help you find a guideline... I also encourage you to not be tied down to it. Don't be afraid to adjust along the way - tweak it until you find your nutritional sweet-spot. Listen to your body - track your progress and re-run the calculator as needed. Here at Recipe For Fitness, we offer a variety of nutrition plans as downloads, just choose the caloric-goal that's right for you.
